An opportunity to give back…

I recently had the opportunity to teach six part time lessons of basic photography at a brand new private school” South downs” in Irene Pretoria Centurion. They call it enrichment classes which entails sports, drama and photography. With 250 pupils (and currently growing at a rapid pace) i was getting it all together for my mixture of 25 little hungry grades seven, eight and nines. Being an artist and not so good speaker i soon realized the importance of this meetings. I said to myself come on Garick surely you know how to give basic training in photography, I was wrong!

My first lesson was a sweating experience with beady little eyes staring at me like I was babbling. Man I tell you it feels daunting. I went home and asked myself why am I doing photography. The answer came shooting through in a still small voice, “because you love it and its your passion”. By that time I was preparing for the next lesson, “Composition”.

Next lesson and having passion in my heart I told the kids what composition meant by showing them different easy steps so they would understand. WOW what an amazing feeling seeing those kids smile and laugh and writing down. As I was driving home I was left with a feeling of joy and with a new look at my passion, not just as photographer but as someone having the opportunity to give back what they love. And the still small voice saying composition and passion together gives you compassion…

I just want to thank my Fiancè Lisa for believing and helping me and also Lucinda for her input. The next four lessons I cant wait for……
